Delbert Applegate, fireman first class, died
on the morning of November 17, 1943, off
the Bougainville Island, in the SW Pacific,
his ship, the U.S.S. McKean, was sunk by a
torpedo launched from a Japanese plane.The explosion caused severe damage & a fire broke out immediately,followed by further explosions,The men in that part of the ship had no opportunity for escape.
