Obituary for Donald Holbrook Jr.
Donald Holbrook Jr.
The man. The myth. The legend. Passed in peace Wednesday, July 18, 2018 2:30 am at the young age of 94 under Hospice care in Palm Harbor, FL.
Born Cambridge, Massachusetts on September 30, 1923 to Donald and Katherine Holbrook. Don served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, attended Choate Prep School in Connecticut and worked many years for the Williams Company in Tampa.
Don was the ultimate optimist, always looking at the bright side of things. His goal was to live to be “127”. Never wanting to be a burden to anyone and always grateful for all things in life.
He had a passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles (often reminiscing of the days he used to ride), dirty martini’s with extra olives, hunting, boating, snow skiing, tennis, golf, gardening, and of course whistling a song or cracking a joke.
He had one of the most beautiful residential landscapes in all of Dunedin before moving to St. Mark Village in 2014.
Don’s zest for life was contagious. As the patriarch of the Holbrook Family he set an incredible example of strength, determination, passion, humor and love of family and friends.
Survivors include his fiancée, Jan Gatewood ; son Jon (Christy) Holbrook; daughter, Donna Ann (Corky) Williams; grandchildren, Justin (Courtnie) Wheeless, Jake and Joel Wheeless, Dusty Ann (Rand) Holdren, Sandi Lee (Steven) McGrath, Kate (Kurt) Griesser, and Tyler Holbrook; great grandchildren: Devenney, Beckett, Lauren, Jake Jr., Kade, Luke, Mckenna, Kyle and great-great-grandchild, Everleigh; nieces Suzie, Debbie, Carol Lee. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Jan and sisters, Katherine “Bunty” and Jane.
Don will be greatly missed but will be heard at the beginning of every meal saying: “Let your appetite be your guide”.
Special thanks to the staff at St. Mark Village Assisted Living Facility, Hospice of the Florida Suncoast , and Palm Harbor Wellness Center for the great care given during his later years.
A private service was held for family and close friends of the family.
Donations in Donald Holbrook Jr.’s name can be made to the National Forest Foundation (NationalForests.org) in lieu of flowers.
