John's father was John Kenneth Riley 1899 - 1970) and his mother was Catherine S. Schlottman (1898 - 1967), He had 2 siblings, Ruth and James. In the 1940 federal census, John (6) was living with his mother, Catherine (42), his father J. Kenneth (41), and siblings R Harriet (3) and J. Alexander (1) in McMinnville, Oregon. Dad said he was a Business Manager at a private college. In the 1950 federal census, John was 16 and living with John, Catherine, and siblings Ruth (13) and James (11) on Poor Farmer Road in Calapooia Oregon. Father John was the director of personnel at a state college and son John was working as a janitor in a retail stationary store. An educated man, John started college at Linfield College, McMinnville, Oregon but transferred to Oregon State College following his marriage in 1953. He received his BS in 1955 and his MS in Education from Oregon State College in 1965. Then he received his doctorate from Rutgers University in 1972 Dr. John Newton Riley married Janet Marie Pedersen (1933–2013) on August 30, 1953, in Redmond, Oregon. He was 19 and Janet was 20. John was a student, Janet was a secretary. John's obituary says that: "He was known for his wisdom and the care in which he mentored his students and children to not only love their work but to have meaning and purpose in all they did. Ultimately, his greatest priority in life was honoring his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and inviting others to consider God in their lives." John Newton Riley: Obituary

For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US.
