After winning a scholarship to study acting at 'The Old Vic' she began her stage career at the 'Lyric Theatre' aged 17 and made her first film in 1931. She went to Hollywood in 1933 and found considerable success before returning to Britain in 1938 following a dispute with MGM studios.
Elizabeth Allan appeared in about 50 films in total from 1931 to 1967. Later in her career she became a popular personality on British television. She died of undisclosed causes on 27 July 1990 in Hove, East Sussex aged 80.
