Erma G. (Horvath)and John Edwin Carr's Wedding Day
Erma and John, who were married at the St. Stephen's Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, were totally deaf and used to communicate with their daughter and deaf friends using sign language. Otherwise, they wrote notes. Erma became deaf after suffering from typhoid fever, caused by drinking contaminated water from a brook while on a family picnic. She graduated from the 8th grade at the Ephpheta School, a private Catholic school for the deaf in Chicago, Illinois, no longer in existence. John became deaf as an infant, when he suffered from pneumonia. He graduated from the 10th grade at the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis, Indiana.
John died 10 January 1982 and Erma 3 April 1994, both in South Bend, Indiana.
