Frank H Butterfield was born in Chicago to parents Milo D Butterfield and Eliza C (Chappell) Butterfield.
Eliza C and her daughter, Othelia (Frank's sister), later moved to Taunton, Massachusetts.
During the Civil War, Frank's older brother and his father both served in the 12 Illinois Cavalry. During that time, Frank Butterfield moved to Taunton for about 4 years and lived with his sister's family. He had an internship and worked as a machinist during the war before moving back to Chicago, where he lived with his uncle, Delos N Chappell, until he married Mary Ellen Holmes in March 1871.
