He had an internship and worked as a machinist during the war before moving back to Chicago, where he lived with his uncle, Delos N Chappell, until he married Mary Ellen Holmes in March 1871.
Theodore Butterfield and his wife, Mary L (McCarthy) Butterfield raised Theodore's younger half-brother, Milo James Butterfield, from infancy and also had one biological child of their own, Theodore Butterfield.
