The portrait was going to be of the two boys, but Vera pitched a fit and wanted to be in the picture too. She still looks a little angry in the final portrait.

Only one girl...the one standing, with long hair and a long dress. Boys were dressed in the same sort of clothing as girls until a certain age...usually around 4 or 5, sometimes even 6 years old.

At that time, little boys were "breeched," meaning they wore "breeches" or pants for the first time. This was the custom right up to the late 1800s...even the very early 1900s.

Boys and girls were treated very much the same and played with a lot of the same toys, like dolls. Being dressed or treated like a specific gender didn't have the importance it does now. In the first half of the 1900s, blue was a girl's color and pink was for boys.

It wasn't until the late 1940s that blue for boy and pink for girls started to become a standard.

Sweet little faces lost in time. Vera, the little girl, lived to be 97. Just think about what she witnessed between 1900 and 1997! What was her life like? She was obviously from a moderately affluent family and was probably well educated, for females of that era. She had 2 children who only outlived her by a few years. Here's a 10 years later photo of her entire family.

Lol I hate to disillusion you. This Van Kleeck family got by okay, but they were definitely not affluent. They always seemed to have enough money to pay for pictures of the kids though.

Their mother had some odd ideas - didn't believe in girls getting much in the way of schooling. Their youngest sister was my grandmother. If I remember the family stories correctly, Grandma made it as far as 7th or 8th grade. Her mother seemed to think that was more than enough education for a girl. At that point the girls were supposed to get a job in a shop and help support the family until they got married.

I love antique photographs. In addition to sharing old photos of my family, I am also going through my collection of "antique store people". They've been sitting in a storage tub in my back room much too long and maybe some of their families will be able to find them here. If I'm able to identify the people in the photo, I upload it not only to AncientFaces, but also to Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Find-A-Grave. If the person in the picture is a military veteran, the photo also goes on Fold3. I figure that the more places I upload these pictures, the greater the chance that a relative will be able to find them.
