Lucinda Riva, the daughter of Dort Clark: SUMMER, 1962: 14 years old. I was traveling the "straw hat circuit" of summer stock in Ogunquit, Maine with my best friend, Mary Powell, and her mother, actress Martha Scott.
Martha was touring her B'way comedy; in the cast was Gene Wilder. He was reprising his B'way role for summer stock. At 14, Mary & I were relentlessly goofy. Our playfulness blended well with Gene; he spent hours "playing" with us backstage, on the beach, at restaurants. Just goofing around, which resulted in side-splitting laughter. More than once, we were sternly warned by the stage manager to "keep it down"....
But I was deeply impressed by Gene's gentle kindness.
He defended us; he enjoyed us and laughed with us. He simply had a magical high-hearted happiness which he bestowed generously. I drank from that.....
RIP, Magic Maker... feeling heartbroken.
