Photo Details

A photo of the computing staff at Harvard University's astronomy department in the late 1800's. Edward Pickerig (far left) thought that women were "better suited to such repetitive drudgery" as computing numbers. He hired his maid, Williamina Fleming to supervise the work. She later became the preeminent woman astronomer in the U.S.
