One story I have heard a lot is when his first child was born he was off at war and couldn't get leave to go home. He had to go AWOL to get to a phone and call my Aunt to tell her he couldn't make it. When he did get home they had a family picture taken and he carried it with him thru the rest of the war. It was in pretty bad condition when he finally got home.
