Ivan was an introvert and loved to read when a boy, which interest carried into adulthood. He was studious, inventive, creative, and a sweet and kind person. He enjoyed solving puzzles, such as crossword puzzles and MENSA puzzles. He joined his brother in Higgerson Brothers Construction Company in the 1940s, and if anything was needed, he would study it and figure out how to build it. Some things could have been patented that he designed, such as hydraulic covers for dump trucks, but the process of patenting was not worth the cost or effort. He also was a tease, which he inherited from his mother's Mertens side.

Graduated from Frank W. Cox High School on Great Neck Rd in Virginia Beach, VA, in 1970 when I was 17 years old. My immediate family of four generations consists of the surnames: Mason, Higgerson, McKenzie, Norwood, Mertens, Garrison, Harris, Weckenmann, Chewning, Wimp, Merzenich, and Werz.
