She was married four times; however, I have never seen any divorce records. I thought her first husband had died, but then I found where he was running a saloon in East Prairie, MO, after she had married Walter B. Higgerson, so they separated and supposedly divorced. Then she married Walter B. Higgerson, who died. She subsequently married Ed Snider, and she ran him off, according to my grandfather, her son, Harry C. Higgerson, and her last husband was Will Coker, who was also run off.

Though younger family members thought when referring to "Uncle Eddie" that his name was Edward, but it was Edgar, which my grandfather, Harry Clifton Higgerson, told me. "Uncleddy" as they called him, never married, and several family members resided with him at various times. He ran a store at Higgerson Landing on the Mississippi River in New Madrid County, Missouri, and I saw his business records/ledger, which are in the possession of Mary Alice (Henry) Higgerson, wife of the late Elzie Mack Higgerson on Kingshighway, New Madrid, MO.

Jacquelina Higgerson "Lena," only daughter of Permelia (Chewning) and Benjamin Higgerson. Jacquelina was born on 28 Dec 1854 in Orange County, Virginia. The birth date on her death certificate is incorrect. She was not 100 years old, though they celebrated that birthday. She was 98. She resided in Orange County, VA, in 1860. Her step-father, William Wallace Porter made her pregnant at the same time his wife was pregnant, so out of embarrassment, they left VA about 1870 and headed westward where people wouldn't be so inquisitive. Once in MO, Wm Wallace took Lena and went westward, she having four children by him while traveling. Finally, Porter left her in MT taking has youngest child to his sister, Julia's, in Flora, IL to rear. He never saw his mother again. She had some happiness in life in that she married a rancher named Thos Francis Daley and had one child by him, Anna May, in 1886. Townspeople could figure out how this "obviously" married woman with four children could marry in the Catholic church, but they did not know she'd never been married before.

She didn't realize that Geneva was her sister until she matured some! Geneva was sent to her grandmother Lizzie (Weckenmann) Mertens and Leo Mertens, Sr.'s, home when Geneva was 10 years old to take care of them in their old age. They lived about a mile or two apart. Geneva cooked and cleaned and tried to go to school and have some social life, while she was there and stayed until the old folks passed on, after which Geneva became betrothed and married Ralph Irvin Mince.
