Benjamin Higgerson 1807 - 1862

Benjamin Higgerson was born in 1807. He married Permelia (Chewning) Higgerson on October 3, 1853 and they later separated on December 25, 1862. They had children John Edgar Higgerson, Jacquelina (Higgerson) Daley, William Buchanan Higgerson, Walter Buchanan Higgerson, and Andrew Jackson Higgerson Sr.. Benjamin's partner was Sarah Ann (Haney) Higgerson, and they had children Mary Eliza (Higgerson) Sutherland and James Thomas Higgerson. Benjamin Higgerson died at age 54 years old on December 25, 1862.

In 1807, in the year that Benjamin Higgerson was born, on March 2nd, the U.S. Congress passed an act to "prohibit the importation of slaves into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States . . . from any foreign kingdom, place, or country" This Federal law, proposed by Thomas Jefferson in 1806, took effect on January 1,1808. However, historians estimate that over 50,000 slaves were brought to the U.S. after the Act since the U.S. did not include Spanish Florida and Texas - and therefore places where slaves could be brought in.

In 1812, he was only 5 years old when on April 30th, Louisiana was admitted to the United States as the 18th state. The area was previously known as the Territory of Orleans.
