James A. Holbrook 1947 - 2023 Harrisburg, Illinois


James A. Holbrook, age 76, of Harrisburg passed away at 8:30 a.m., Monday, August 7, 2023 at the home of his daughter, Stephanie, in Harrisburg.
James was born in Rosiclare, IL on June 6, 1947. He was the son of Adrian Holbrook and Julia Bell. James married Denise McKenna on December 7, 1974. She preceded him in death on January 4, 2018.
He graduated high school and enlisted in the Navy. James retired from the Navy after 23 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer. He continued to work odd jobs as a carpenter for several years.
James is survived by his two daughters, Stephanie (Rick) Henry of Harrisburg, Illinois and Blair (Adam) Kilgore of Decatur, Alabama; and son, Jimmy (Cynthia) Holbrook of Harrisburg; a brother, Chester Holbrook of Elizabethtown; and two sisters, Joey Lewis of Rosiclare and Becky Barnard of Elizabethtown; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Denise.
James wish was to be cremated and for no services to be held. Those who wish to make a memorial in his memory should direct the memorials to Hospice of Southern Illinois at 204 Halfway Road, Marion, Illinois 62959.
Absher Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills in charge of arrangements.

My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
