A photo of James Naismith. He created the game of Basket Ball in 1891 at the age of 30 - using a soccer ball, two peach baskets, and 13 rules. A simple game that grew into a national sport.
James Naismith was born to John Naismith (1833 - 1870) and Margaret Young (1833 - 1870). His father was born in Scotland and his mother was born in Ontario, Canada. He had two siblings, sister Annie and brother Robert.
John Naismith married Maude Evelyn Sherman (1869 - 1937) on June 20, 1894 in Springfield, Massachusetts and they had five children: daughters Margaret, Helen, and Maude, and sons John and James.
After Maude died in 1937, James married Florence Kincaid on June 11, 1939. Shortly after, in November, James died of a brain hemorrhage.
It is said that James invented the game of basketball because he needed an indoor game for his YMCA students in the cold winter months. He wrote the original rulebook for basketball. He also founded the University of Kansas basketball program, where he taught future coach Phog Allen, who himself was also a legendary basketball coach and taught a succeeding dynasty of legendary coaches.
Invented in 1891 by a Canadian PE teacher, basketball has become a popular sport - and these are the photos showing many of us enjoying "hoops".
Although very popular now, the game of basketball is only a little over 120 years old. It was invented by a Canadian who became a PE teacher in Massachusetts - he needed a way to keep students busy at...

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
