After Maude died in 1937, James married Florence Kincaid on June 11, 1939. Shortly after, in November, James died of a brain hemorrhage. It is said that James invented the game of basketball because he needed an indoor game for his YMCA students in the cold winter months. He wrote the original rulebook for basketball. He also founded the University of Kansas basketball program, where he taught future coach Phog Allen, who himself was also a legendary basketball coach and taught a succeeding dynasty of legendary coaches.
