William George Naismith 1884 - 1956

William George Naismith of Prahran, City of Stonnington County, VIC Australia was born in 1884 in Prahran to William Brownley Naismith and Lizzie Norman Naismith. He had siblings Amy Eliza Naismith, Norman Naismith, Ada (Naismith) Wilde, Albert Naismith, Edmund James Naismith, Annie Maria (Naismith) Roberts, and Samuel Naismith. He married Gertrude Hannah (Gissing) Naismith in 1907, and had children Olive May Naismith, George William Naismith, Jessie Amelia Naismith, and Jean Alice Naismith. William Naismith died at age 71 years old on September 18, 1956 in Prahran.

In 1884, in the year that William George Naismith was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today. In 1897, by the time he was just 13 years old, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".
