James W. “J.W.” Holbrook

BLUEFIELD, Va. — James W. “J.W.” Holbrook, 97, of Bluefield, Virginia went to his heavenly home on Thursday, March 31, 2016.

J.W. was born on January 10, 1919 in Gratton, Virginia. He was the son of the late Randolph and Mamie Wagner Holbrook. J.W. had been a 50 + year member of the Harmon Masonic Lodge in Bluefield, Virginia, Past Master of Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Virginia. He was a member of the VFW Post 9696 in Bluefield, Virginia. James served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Denver and Doc Holbrook; two sisters Thelma King and Cassie Carter; and three daughters. He is the last survivor of his immediate family.

Survivors Include: His loving wife of 42 years Glenda Belcher Holbrook of the home. Daughter: Linda Montgomery of Nicholasville, Kentucky. Stepson: Gary Taylor of Bristol, VA.

According to his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Graveside Rites will be held on Monday, April 04, 2016 at 11:00 am at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, West Virginia where VFW Post #9696 Bluefield, Virginia and American Legion Post #14 Pocahontas, Virginia will be conducting military graveside rites. Friend and family will be serving as pallbearers.

I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
