James was born on August 3, 1958 in Las Vegas, Nevada and had two brothers. He grew up in Las Vegas and attended Western High School. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps after high school and served from August 2, 1978 until August 2, 1982. He never had any children of his own, but loved his nieces. On October 24, 2004, James Phillip Longhurst passed away from a motorcycle accident.
