John D. Godeus, San Francisco Photographer
Back of a CDV advertising the photography services of John D. Godeus, a well-known San Francisco photographer. In 1868, Godeus, from Holland, bought the San Francisco home of John Hittell, the man who was one of the founders of the Acadmey of Natural Sciences.
In 1864, Godeus' wife, was killed aboard the steamboat, Washoe, en route from Sacramento to San Francisco. John Godeus remarried in 1865 and both he and his new wife, Mary, were portrait photographers.
This is the only photo advertisement that I have seen that has a drawing of the photographer on it.
