Joseph C. "Rooster" Holbrook, age 90 of Cucumber, WV went to be with the Lord at 12:05 PM on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at his home, after a sudden illness. Born June 7, 1924 at Boone, NC, he was a son of the late Isaac W. and Laura Mae Holbrook. At age 18, he joined the US Army and served seven years for his country. At age 25, he became a coal miner at the #6 Newhall Mine and retired after 32 years. On July 4, 1958, he married the love of his life, Audrey G. Holbrook. They were married 57 years, together 60 years and have been residents of McDowell county most of their lives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Brown and her husband, Randy; sisters, Katherine Hazel Holbrook, Alta H. Hammond Shepherd; brothers, Winford Holbrook, and James Holbrook; and sister in law, Ollie Holbrook.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Holbrook; daughter, Lisa Thomas and husband, Curtis Coburn; grandchildren, Leanna Thomas, Eric Mitchell, Joseph Wyatt, Ethel "Nichole" Wyatt; great grandchildren, James D. Harrison, III and Lacey R. Wyatt; sisters, Louise Holbrook and Ruth Holbrook, brothers, Douglas Holbrook, and Billy Holbrook; lifelong friends, Mary and Ray Nelson, Lettie Mitchell, Ann Charles, Richard Stilwell, Connie Patterson, and many, many more.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Pastor Arnold Marrs officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, VA and Virginia National Guard Honor Team of Gate City, VA. Pallbearers will be Eric Mitchell, Joseph Wyatt, Curtis Coeburn, Nicole Wyatt, Billy Holbrook, Jr., and Leanna Thomas.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 PM Friday, August 1, 2014.
