Judy was born to Peter and Connie (Hernandez) Salinero on December 9, 1945. Her siblings are Frank Salinero and Joyce Salinero who died in infancy before Judy was born. Judy attended schools in Hayward: Burbank Elementary School, Winton Junior High School and Sunset High School, graduating in 1963. She also graduated from California State College at Hayward in December 1966 with a BA in U.S. History. Following this she obtained a Teaching Credential in 1967 with majors in U.S. History and minors in Geography and Humanities with a core in Spanish. Her first and only full time employer after this was with the Fremont Unified School District at Mission San Jose High School. At various times she taught World Studies, Anthropology, Minority Studies and United States History. She started teaching when she was 21 and retired at age 55. In her first years of teaching, she travel extensively in Europe during her summer breaks. She hitched hiked with friends in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia while also traveling conventionally through other countries. Judy was married to her first husband for a brief period in the early 70s. In 1977 Judy married her husband George. They met and fell in love while teaching at the same high school. They had no children together but she was proud to be a stepmother to of her Suzanne Dillon Hopkins and Scott Dillon and in becoming a grandmother to Isabella Claire Hopkins (her Izzy). Judy and George loved travel and in the early years of their marriage enjoyed traveling the US in their VW “pop top “ camper. This was how they enjoyed their honeymoon which took them as far east as Maine and Nova Scotia. Another memorable trip was traveling the Alcan highway. More comfortable travel eventually followed taking them to all 7 continents and to over 100 countries, some of them multiple times. Many trips they traveled independently, others with tour groups and others on cruises. Several trips were made with one or both of George’s brothers and their wives.
