Playing the devil's advocate here... the Klan was an organization that addressed concerns of the dispossessed in the South. It was racist and it was also a source of support for people who needed it. I think I've characterized it fairly. If you were one of those people, the Klan was heroic to you. That's why it was so big. Not all the Klan members were sinister, and some people left it when they were disillusioned by it. but overall it earned its tarnished reputation. There were Klan marches in Denver in the 1920's.
