He was my step-father. When my mother met him, Lars was a seaman. Lars was a very hard working steeplejack which is a very dangerous job. Because of Lars we were able to move out of the Red Hook projects and into three bedroom apartments and from then on I had my own bedroom. We ended up in Bay Ridge on Ovington Avenue in a beautiful apartment only a few blocks from Bay Ridge High School where I studied Norwegian. He loved to dance and was highly intelligent and read 2 American newspapers every day. His son Leif Karlsen came to visit us. His son was very handsome and lived in Norway.
