This photo was taken when Leo enlisted in the Australian Army. The following information is from the Australian War Memorial:

Private Leo Bernard Allan, 2/26th Battalion, Australian Infantry.

He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942.

Private Allan, aged 24, died as a prisoner of the Japanese on 21 February 1945. He was the son of Bernard and Clara Allan. He is commemorated on the Labuan Memorial Panel 13. Leo Bernard Allan was born to Bernard and Clara Allan in New South Wales, Australia. A World War II member of the "B" Force, Leo was a private and became a prisoner of war in a Japanese concentration camp in 1942. Leo Allan's exact gravesite is unknown but he was buried at Sandakan No. 1 Cemetery, Malaysia. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US.
