Colonel of a regiment of the Scots Brigade in the pay of Holland. Wounded at Ramillies (Belgium) in 1706. This was early in a long career that culinated with his nomination as lieutenant general in the infantry in 1747.
He receive a baronship in 1752 - "Baron de Petferren, Lieutenant General et Proprietaire d'un Regiment Ecosais, au service des Etats Hollandais en 1752 et Grand Major dela Ville et citadelle de Namur"
He was the first Halkett of four generations who died in his bed following a well filled life.
