1880's Missouri: These young ladies are the height of fashion! Given the white dresses and the abundance of flowers on their hats, it may be Spring/Summer? Imagine wearing all of these clothes - and a corset! - on a hot summer day?

They look beautiful but I would not do well in a corset and all the layers.

Look at the waist. My grandma after 9 kids had an 18” waist back in that day. So I was told anyway.

Who felt the need to Don the women is 30+ lbs of clothing while the men wore shirts and pants. No wonder so many women fainted all the time!

1)they don't fainted all the time. Often they pretended to because it was "feminine"
2)it's not true, men had to wear full set during summer too.
3)actually, more layers fresher you are, because you are isolated.

Every day, my grandma would put on (in order) an undershirt, underpants, foundation garment, slip, and a dress. Also hosiery held up with garters on the foundation garment. She wore that every day of her life. I don't know how she survived the heat. She never had AC either.
I love the clothes from that era..

Gorgeous dresses on beautiful ladies, but I'm wondering if this photo isn't actually from around 1900 (give or take a year or two on either side). These dresses have more of that S-curve look; they don't have the narrow silhouette or the bustle of 1880. Plus the hats fit closer to the head. (Sorry, I'm not trying to be a know-it-all because I'm definitely not; I just want to give these lovely ladies their rightful place in time.)

Here's my issue with the clothing of these time periods....going to the bathroom, especially for women of menopause age and the women were incontinent. I see many unfortunate accidents!
