Lucy Weston (1888-) stage actress and singer born in London, England. As a child performer she appeared in the British Music Halls before emigrating on the Lusitania to America in 1908 where she toured widely with various theatre companies including a number of appearances on Broadway with early productions of the Ziegfeld Follies.
Diane Orrvar Stone Actually, very low necklines were the fashion in the Victorian (the young queen wore them, too) and Edwardian era for evening gowns, and so costumes with a low neckline weren't risque. what was risque was showing off too much of a woman's legs. The gown in the photo here is a Worth ballgown ca. 1905.
It's using flags in the exact shape and assembly of a real flag that is considered vulgar--not the Stars and Stripes motifs, but things that look as though they could have been made from an actual intact flag. Like the winning athletes who drape their sweaty selves in actual flags for the cameras after victory. Bunting, costumes etc. such as above, or iconic characters like Columbia and Uncle Sam, are traditional and generally not criticized for irreverence.
