Margaret Dumont was an American stage and film actress, born on October 20, 1882
in Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for her roles as the comic foil to the Marx Brothers in seven of their films. Groucho Marx referred to her as "practically the fifth Marx brother".
Dumont began her theatrical career in 1902 and was trained as an opera singer and actress. Despite her character's seeming obliviousness to insult, Dumont was not humorless and contradicted this belief in a 1942 interview.
