How would you like to deal with that hair every day without modern conveniences? The beautiful Mary Anne (Maime) Mellinger taken sometime around the 1880s.

With all that those women had to do in those days I have seen some pretty amazing 'doo's on hair. God Bless them for all their hard work.

My hair is basically styled that way and just that long. I just wash it once a week and dry it and braid it.

~ I find that long hair is really easy to take care of. Eileen Wheeler is right. As time as passed and my hair is not as full as it was in my younger years when long and flowing, I find a good old fashioned Gibson Girl updo works for every occasion. Takes minutes to do and looks good. Back then, just getting clean water and shampoo of any kind might have been the problem though. ;)

l have fine, thin hair, not quite to my waist. A Gibson is how l "set my hair", and l can go anywhere in it! At work, l mostly just pull it back with a flexible band.

I had very long hair for over years until last summer when I got a very short cut. Much easier short, but not that hard long, just wash before bed, dry in the ,morning, I just got tired of always wearing it braided to keep it out of the way. Wearing heavy clothing and dresses like they did back then would be the big problem.

Usually a style like her's was done by braiding it while it was damp and she slept in [external link] Grandmother did her hair that way. Each time she would cut her hair she would have a braid over 4 foot long. The family still has them.

It was likely put up or braided the rest of the time, then taken down for the picture. It may have only been taken down every three days or so to wash and brush out, so she likely was not dealing with it each day. Great picture!

In the old days, women only washed their hair every 2 weeks, at most. Think of it - pump the water, carry it inside, heat it on the woodstove, get out a tub, and just to wash your hair! My Mother only made me wash mine every 2 weeks for that very reason - it was really labor intensive.

I'm working on that length now. I have along way to go but , it will be worth it. My hair goes almost to my waist . I only cut a half inch off every couple months . It's all one length except my bains. My hair grows fast. But so far its been pretty easy to take care of. I wash every other day and let it air dry. Having fine hair helps it to dry really fast. And everyone loves to play with it. I love my long hair. Its really not that much trouble .
