Memorial Day Service 1927
This is a gathering of veterans of the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, and World War I. They are gathered at Sheridan Square in Somerset, Perry Co., OH. The statue in the background is of Genl. Phil Sheridan on his horse. He was originally from Perry Co., OH. Of the two gentlemen standing in front of the curb, the one on the left is my great-grandfather Charles Frederick STICKEL.

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veteran's Day originated from World War I when in November 1918 an ending of hostilities went into effect on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month."

However, it wasn't until June of 1919 when President Wilson signed a Proclamation that Armistice Day was officially designated as a day "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory."

Today we honor all veterans from all wars - like in this 1927 photo where veterans from the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, and World War I gathered together. Thank you for your sacrifices and bravery.

I still think of it as Armistice Day but of course I honor all veterans.
