Carrie Clinton Lane Chapman Catt was born to Lucius Lane and Maria Clinton. Carrie Lane married Leo Chapman (died 1886) and they didn't have children. They co-owned the Mason City (Iowa) Republican newspaper until he became ill in 1885 and they then moved to San Francisco, where he died. Carrie was the first woman reporter in San Francisco and became greatly interested in working women and their welfare and was active in the women's suffrage movement.
