Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio. He was the fifth child of Rutherford Hayes and Sophia Birchard. His father was a successful merchant and farmer, and his mother was a deeply religious and civic-minded woman. Hayes had four older siblings and two younger siblings.
In 1852, Hayes married Lucy Ware Webb, who was known for her intelligence, charm, and wit. They had eight children together, and their marriage was considered to be a happy and loving partnership.
Hayes was a lawyer and politician who served as the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881. He began his career in public service as a city solicitor in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later served as a member of the Ohio State Legislature and the United States House of Representatives.
During the Civil War, Hayes served in the Union Army and was wounded several times in battle. He was promoted to the rank of brevet major general for his service.
As President, Hayes focused on issues of civil service reform, education, and immigration. He also worked to promote civil rights for African Americans and other minority groups, and he was known for his commitment to honesty, integrity, and fairness.
After leaving office, Hayes remained active in public life and continued to work on issues related to education and civil rights. He died on January 17, 1893, at the age of 70.
