Raymond Fred Hippen is the son of Margaret Jutting (1886-1944) and Okko Hippen (1890-1957). He was born on March 11, 1925 in Buffalo Center, Winnebago, Iowa and had siblings Ubbe James Hippen (1923-1940) and Mary Geraldine Hippen (1929-1998). He was married to Henrietta Dena Walters (1923-2019) and together they had a daughter Ruth Helene Hippen (1961-2012). Raymond was a farmer.
