She was born in Caldwell County on August 25, 1936 to the late Fred Dula and Wilma Simmons Dula. She was married to her high school sweetheart,Lawrence L. Richards, for 60 years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Fred Richards; sisters, Anita Tolbert and Bernola Elmore; and brother, Thad Henson. Other than her husband she is survived by her children, Bryson Richards; Stewart Richards and wife Teresa; brothers, Steward Dula and wife, Sue; Charles "Joe" Dula and wife, JoAnn; sister, Modena Ellis; grandchildren, Benji Richards and wife, Summer; Robin Laxton and husband, Steven; Joshua Richards and Deborah; Bradley Richards and wife, Kristy; great-grandchildren, Darby Maie Richards, Kaleb Laxton, Kayla Laxton, Adisyn Richards, and Xander Richards. A celebration of Mrs. Richard's life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Keith Gilliam officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls. Pallbearers will be: Benji D. Richards, Bradley J. Richards, Charles B. Dula, Darrin H. Dula, William J. Dula and Steven Laxton. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to: McCreary Cancer Center, 212 Mulberry Street, Lenoir, NC 28645. Evans Funeral Service & Crematory of Lenoir is serving the Richards family.

We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US.
