I question the date of this photo. I found a son named Stanley to this couple on Findagrave born May 1895 and died 4 Apr 1897. At first I thought about it being was customary to use the same name after a sibling died in infancy. However, according to Familysearch this couple had Earl 1898,Leo 1900, Hazel 1905, Margaret 1907, June 1910, Steffen 1913 and Mabel 1916
Fred, I’ve also read about the practices in those times and my first thought was that the look in this baby’s eyes was one of no longer being alive. They would prop them up right after death. I wouldn’t be surprised. In a way, he does look lifeless.
