I would love to know the answer. My grandmother was in Memphis when her father died, around 1898-1900. In 1900, she and her younger sister were taken from their mother and placed in an orphanage. My grandmother was approximately 8 and the sister was 4. They were separated and Grandmother’s life took many twists and turns. According to the records at the orphanage, Grandmother’s name was Dora Lowry and the sister’s name was Dolly. We do know that her sister was called Dolly and that her given names were Dorothy Vera, but my grandmother never claimed the name Dora. In fact, I was the one to find the records, with the name Dora, long after my grandmother died. If you know of any family stories that would fit my grandmother’s story, please respond.
Thank you,
Beverly

Currently, I am researching my grandmother's past and looking for her parents. She and her sister were put into an orphanage in April, 1900, in Memphis, TN. Their surname at the orphanage was listed as "Lowry," but so far I have not been able to find their mother even though she was still living at that time. Their father could have been named John or George or even John George. He died sometime between 1897 and 1900. At the orphanage, my grandmother's name was Dora and her sister's name was Dorothy(Dolly). They were separated and Dolly was adopted. She died in 1907. My grandmother died in 1972 never knowing what happened to her mother. I would love to complete that story for her, as would my thirty-five first cousins.
