Tommy was born to Edward and piccolo in 1933 . He was a middle child one of nine siblings. Born during the Great Depression, he told of the hardship of being poor. His mother piccolo would go out to the yard and pick dandelions for their supper. Some days there would be no supper, some days he would alternate with another sibling so that sibling would have supper. Times were hard. As he grew older he was determined not to live in poverty. He had always been a hard worker and he always kept a job.
