U.S. Capitol before 1814
This is a drawing of the U.S. Capitol before British soldiers burned the Capitol in the War of 1812. It was done between 1814 and 1820 and must have been done from the artist's memory of what Pennsylvania Avenue and the Capitol Building looked like before being partially destroyed. The artist was originally thought to be Benjamin Latrobe but several prominent scholars now dismiss that idea. It looks very peaceful in D.C. then, doesn't it?
