He married Anna Maxine Schafer, and had children Eloise Sue (Schafer) Croskey and James Schafer. Wayne Schafer died at age 79 years old on March 29, 1993 at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus Euclid Ave, in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg, Holmes County.
