Actor. He was born in San Francisco, California. He was a familiar character actor, who appeared in over 200 films. He played in "The Richest Man in Town" (1941), "Bambi" (1942) (voice of friend owl), "Rhapsody in Blue" (1945) as Rachmaninoff, "The Blue Dahlia" (1946), "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" (1948), "They Live By Night" (1948), "Little Women" (1949), "All The King's Men" (1949), "Adam's Rib" (1949), "People Will Talk" (1951), as the miser uncle of Jeanne Crain, "Niagara" (1953), "The Wild One" (1953), "Johnny Guitar" (1954), "The Man With the Golden Arm" (1955) and "Cape Fear" (1962), his last film. Also he had a recurrent role as Ben Weaver in "The Andy Griffith Show." He died of cancer in Hollywood.
