Victor Besant had originally joined the 9th Lancers, but on Saturday 1st July 1916, he found himself a member of the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade. He was situated in the trenches south west of the village of Serre, France. He was one of the first to go over the top in the ‘big push’ but by the end of the day he and over 150 other men of the 1st Rifle Brigade were dead. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France, with over 72,000 men who have no known grave. He was an under-age soldier.
