Great Aunt Laura

Laura A. Crews(Oct.1872--Nov. 01, 1956) was born in Missouri to Joseph E. and Mary Ann McMillan Crews, who were natives of Stokes/Forsyth Cos. in North Carolina. Her family had gone to Missouri and stayed for a number of years, where she and some of her siblings were born. Her immediate family returned to NC after their home was supposedly destroyed by a tornado. Laura became a nurse, and worked at Salem Female Academy in Winston-Salem, NC, and also as a private nurse for the Willingham family. She never married. She is buried with many of her relatives at Red Bank Missionary Baptist Church in Forsyth Co. NC, not far from Germanton.

Picture of Charles Edward and Susanna Marshall Crews, of Forsyth Co. NC. (From a copy). This was believed to have been taken at the same time their youngest daughter, Mary Ellen Crews had her wedding picture taken for her marriage to Thomas Jefferson Styers. C. Edward and Susanna (called Sukie) had the following children: Susan Katherine Crews Flynt Davis, Rev. Rufus William Crews, Joseph Edward Crews, James Sidney Crews, Matthew John Crews III, Millie Ann Crews Styers, Walter Crews, and Mary Ellen Crews Styers. C. Edward was born in Halifax Co. Va., to Matthew John I and Susan Reves (Reeves) Crews. Susanna was a daughter of Thomas Riley and Milly Waggoner Marshall of Forsyth Co. NC. (The part of Forsyth that used to be Stokes Co.) C. Edward was a farmer, mainly of tobacco.

Myrtle Beach Inn

This is where my grandmother, Kate H. Crews, would stay every time she went to Myrtle Beach. She took me with her several times, and this was very much like a boarding house. It had it's own dining room, where meals were served. I believe it was still there as late as the early 1960's. (It was so much nicer than today's motels.)

Homes of Unknown Families in Greensboro, NC

This is how North Elm St. appeared around 1911. Later, Wesley Long Hospital occupied the same area, which has also now been relocated. This picture came from an old postcard that my grandmother, Kate Harger, received from her future husband, Cleve Crews, who was a conductor for Southern Railway.

Does anyone know who lived in any of the homes shown in this old 1911 picture??

Elm and Market Sts.

This was the main business area of Greensboro, NC as it appeared around 1910. (Not sure whether this is looking north or south from Elm St.) It has changed a lot since then. (This was a postcard sent to my grandmother from my grandfather, who was a conductor for Southern Railway, and who lived in Greensboro at the time.)

St. Anne's in Virginia

My father, Jack Harger Crews, attended this "St Anne's" when he was a boy. (He is the one in the white shirt, in center between first & second row with blond hair). I'd love to know exactly what St. Anne's was----a private school??--industrial school??---or what??? And would anyone know exactly where in Virginia it was located??? (I have assumed around Ashland, but I could be wrong). Does anyone know anything about St. Anne's???

The Rev. Rufus Crews Family

This was the old home of the Rev. Rufus William Crews, of Forsyth Co., NC., now gone. It was located between Rural Hall and Germanton, where Industrial School Rd. is now. The picture shows Rufus' son, Alberto Branch Crews on the horse; Rev. Rufus Crews standing, (with the "preacher's outfit" on); daughter Etta Blanch Crews---later Mrs. S.C. Cowan of Leaksville, NC.; Rowena Jackson "Jack" Crews, (sitting with the guitar)---later Mrs. Charlie T. Grubbs of Rural Hall, NC.; Rufus' father-in-law, Jackson Guthrie, sitting; Patricia Crews, later Mrs. W.P. Meares of Jacksonville, Fl.; and Ada Virginia Crews--later Mrs. Ed Crisco of High Point, NC. Rufus was a Baptist minister and a tobacco farmer.

Mrs. Crews and her Tenants

This is a picture of my grandmother, Kate Harger Crews, (the older lady on the top row) when she had a boarding house on Ashe St. (Lady with the plaid jacket on next to Kate appears to be my mother, Helen J. Crews). Most of the girls that roomed in her home were teachers, etc. I don't know the names of any of the young ladies in the picture. But in the 1930 census, it shows that the following people were rooming in her house: Helene Hudnell, 31 and a teacher; Ida Belle Moore, 26 and a high school teacher; Eleanor M. Hill, 25 and a librarian born in Tennessee; Mary S. Southerland, 27 and a teacher born in Virginia, Mary L. Johnson, 23 and a teacher at a junior high school born in Virginia; Catherine Jones, 24, another teacher born in Virginia; Virginia Hollingsworth, 24 and a teacher from Georgia; and Gladys Pinkston, 28, also a teacher born in Georgia. (I don't know if any of these are the ladies in the picture.)
