Asa Johnson Family, Virginia 1949
As a widower, my great-grandfather, Asa Johnson, married at age 75 to a spinster of the same age. This did not set well with the family, as she had announced the intended marriage before he even asked for her hand. Asa was too much of a gentleman to deny her claim, though. This photo is a family get-together where everyone seems to be having a good time. It's also one of the rare photos showing his second wife, Miss Eva, smiling.

Margaret Gary Johnson's Nut Cake Recipe
This was a favorite recipe handed down through my great-aunt Margaret Gary Johnson's family. Margaret dictated the recipe to my grandmother, Louise Johnson who wrote it on a note pad from my grandfather. Margaret seldom shared the recipe because she had found that no one ever followed her instructions or changed ingredients and then complained that their effort was unsuccessful. This is a dry, not too sweet, cake with a dense consistency often served at Christmas along with fruit cake and wine jelly. This written version neglects to mention that the nuts are black walnuts and that they are very finely minced by hand. In the days before food processors and blenders, it must have been quite an effort.

Edith Lucille (Hendricks) Gary, Virginia 1950
This snapshot of Lucille Gary (1877 - 1959) was taken at her daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Gary Moran in Richmond, Virginia's Westover Hills neighborhood circa 1950. Lucille had grown up in a large family and always had a full house throughout her married life. Following the death of her husband, Maeadows Tucker Gary (1880 - 1947), Lucille lived with her daughter, Betty. Lucille was a great cook and her recipe for nut cake is available on this site.

Moran, holds the sign. Margaret, her late father, Meadows Tucker Gary, her sister Betty, and Robert Moran all worked at Richmond's Miller & Rhoads department store. The wedding clothes, flowers, decorations and cake, all came from the store. The "just married" sign came from the display department. The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in New York and saw the still-new production of "Oklahoma!".

Photo of Frank David Johnson (1912 - 1995) in front of his parents' home in Richmond, Virginia's Scott's Addition neighborhood. .Frank was the youngest of four sons born to Ethel Byron Chesterman and Asa Johnson. He is wearing a child's military uniform inspired by the United States' participation in World War I. As an adult, Frank married Miss Margaret Estelle Gary, also of Richmond.
