Virginia Harlan
Known as Virginia Gleason by many, her family thought of her as a rockstar. Born during the roaring twenties on September 11, 1921 in Chicago to Robert and Edna Harlan. Virginia placed middle between her two brothers, Bobby and Bruce Harlan. Next door to the Harlan's lived a family with a young man, Barton Gleason, that she would marry and have more than forty-five wonderful years together with. One of her many accomplishments was the establishment of the "Pink Ladies", a volunteer organization that was auxiliary and worked through Lakeland Hospital in Elkhorn.
Living in southern Wisconsin, they had a chain of department stores, Barton's until they retired to Arizona. Bart parted her side in 1994 when he lost his fight to Cancer. Ironically, at the same time, their very good friend, Eva, a Holocaust survivor, was also dying of cancer. Eva asked her husband Don to check in on Virginia after she was gone. That friendship blossomed and when Virginia suggested they fly to Wisconsin to meet her family, his response was, not until we are married. They were married that week in 2004. Don and "Ginny" Ritter giggled happily for many years until his demise at 101yrs.
Ginny loved Golf, Bridge, Scrabble, Wordle and chocolate. She was crazy about weaving, books and miniatures. She participated in local events, even though her sight and hearing were greatly impaired. When you visited with her, you might ask how she was doing.
She would always say, 100%. Her keen sense of humor was a testament to how positivity can affect your health and relationships. On Friday, April 21, 2023 she got her wings at 101 yrs old in Sun City, AZ. . She loved God, their three children, Barbara, Linda, and Harlan, nine grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren very much.
Our family would like to thank Linda Mineo for the gift of friendship and years of dedicated service. Royal Oaks Retirement Village was home to her and they offered superior service and activities-for that, we are also grateful.
She was an inspiration and love to our entire family and will be greatly missed.
