George Guest was sentenced to death in 1776 for theft of livestock but was commuted to 9 years with transportation to the colonies. originally slated for America this was changed to the new New South Wales penal colony about to be set up. He was transported in the first fleet 1778 after a miserable time in the prison hulks in the Thames estuary. Shortly after he was moved to the even harder confines of Norfolk Island and after completion of his sentence met and married Mary Bateman who had an more perilous journey in the second fleets first ship regarded as (The Floating Brothel). They seemed to make a success of their venture into farming on Norfolk and were asked to move to Van Diemans Land where a new colony was being formed. He was successful in bringing wool and sheep production to this new colony and gained the respect of the Government, albeit grudgingly. mary Bateman was unfortunatly commited to an Insane asylum in 1810 and he married Sarah. Their Grandaughter Elizabeth Guest married my paternal G Grandfather William Todd in Braidwood NSW Circa 1861.
