John's father was John Kneiling and his mother was Ethel Tucker In the 1930 census, John was 10, living in Tacoma WA (his birthplace) with parents John and Ethel and sibling Doris, age 7. He was listed as "J Gilbert" (since his father was also John). His father, who was born in Austria, was working as a welder in a job shop. Mother Ethel did needlework. In the 1940 census, "J Gilbert" was living as a lodger on Channing Wy in Berkeley CA. He was a student - it must have been at UC Berkeley - he was in his second year of college. US World War II draft card information: John was 21, living in Urbana IL, 6 ft 1 in tall, 155 lbs, had brown hair, blue eyes, a dark complexion, and his next of kin was "Mrs Carnely". He was working as a draftsman for Ameri ascan Bridge Co. According to a 2006 article about him on railroad.net, he was an industrial engineer who promoted some controversial ideas about trains.
