Ellen Minty was born in London and migrated to Australia as a small child. There were a number of attempts to leave England but they were unfortunate to be caught up by ship wrecks. On a successful voyage the Minty family arrived in Victoria in 1863. Ellen Minty’s early years were spent growing up in Victoria before the family moved to Wagga Wagga in southern NSW. In 1892, Ellen Minty married William Baker, a farmer at Coolamon, NSW. Their early life would have been quite hard as William Baker built a house out of the scrub on the property. The Baker’s were early pioneers in the Coolamon district. The farm was used for wheat growing. Ellen and William Baker had 7 children. 1. William Frederick Baker born. 1893 married 1992 died 1984 buried Jambaroo, NSW 2. Violet Baker (later Mrs Malcom Murchison) born 1896 married 1919 died 1965 3. Ida Baker (Later Mrs Robert Martin) born 1898 married 1923 died 1996 4. Elsie Baker (later Mrs Roy Sinapius) born 1899 married 1927 died 1989 5. Ethel Baker (later Mrs Russell Tom Miller) born 1901 married 1926 died 1988 6. Harold Edward Baker born 1903 married 1931 died 1975 7. Arthur Russell Baker born 1906 married 1929 died 1961 When they retired from the farm, Ellen and William Baker moved into Coolamon. Ellen’s husband passed away in 1932. She spent a few more years living in Coolamon before living with daughters. Ellen was living with her daughter Ida Martin in Clunes, northern NSW, when she passed away. She is buried in the Methodist section of the Clunes lawn cemetery.

After arriving in Melbourne, the Minty family spent about 11 years resident in Victoria before moving over the boarder of the Colony of New South Wales and settling in Wagga Wagga. William Minty worked as a saddler for Mr Robert Cassin in Gurwood Street, Wagga Wagga. He eventually became the manager of the saddler business and eventually took over the business. William Minty advertised a number of times in the Wagga Wagga Advertiser newspaper. When William Minty passed away there was an auction at his business on Friday 14 August 1885.
