Organised by Mrs. Oram in aid of the Darling Babies Home, the Fireside Concert provided by the newly formed Dandenong Orchestra and assisting artists, on July 6th, was such an unqualified success that a repeat performance has been asked for. With its glowing fire and attractive decorations the Assembly Room looked most inviting and was quickly filled by an appreciative crowd of music-lovers. The orchestra of 15 players, conducted by Mr. Eric Reader, provided an excellent varied programme and showed great promise. Particularly pleasing was the appearance of so many younger players who cannot help but benefit from the experiance gained. In the orchestra were Messrs. Begg, Perce and Stan Prior, David Bell, Roy Wright, Norm Uniacke, Glen and Derek Prior, Mrs. Van Damme, and her daughter Evelyn, Diane Begg, Anne Uniacke, Iris Watson. BRISBANE.- A member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra is missing, presumed drowned, after a beach picnic at Fingal, Northern N.S.W., yesterday afternoon. He was Glenthorne Prior, 29, first trumpeter, of Devine Street, Brisbane. His wife and three young children stood helplessly on the beach during the land, sea and air rescue attempts. Two other members of the orchestra, Leif-Hansen, 25, violinist, a Dane, of Sydney, and Jane Freed, 23, violinist, of 'Claremont Street, Red Hill, Brisbane, were saved from the rough seas. Seven members of the orchestra were swimming about 1:30 p.m. when they got into difficulties. A strong current began sweeping them out to sea. A fisherman, Claude Smith, of Kingscliff, sounded the alarm, and John Milligan, of Fingal, took two reels from Fingal Surf Club house. A Fingal life saver, Barry Phillips, 18, put on a belt and swam out about 150 yards to support Jane Freed in the water. Other Fingal life savers John Cunningham and Bob Neeld, joined in the rescue. Mr. Cunningham, 32, a champion surf swimmer, went after Mr. Prior. Mr. Neeld, a former Bondi life saver, swam out to assist Phillips and the girl. Mr. Neeld rescued the girl and Mr. Hansen was able to pull himself to safety along a rescue line. After failing to find Mr. Prior, Mr. Cunningham went back on a surf board to begin a four-hour search. A crowd of about 150 people had gathered to watch the rescue attempts when a light aircraft was called from Coolangatta to assist. The pilot reported schools of sharks immediately north and south of the search area. Boat crews from Fingal and Cudgen life saving clubs assisted in the search.
